Jeff is an app that finds things to do in the UK, on your own or with your friends. This page explains what Jeff collects, why, who it's shared with, and how you can see or delete it. It's written to be read, so if anything isn't clear, just email me.
Who runs Jeff
Jeff is run by me, Harry Parkin, as an individual in the UK. I'm the "data controller" for your information under UK data protection law (the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018). You can reach me at [email protected].
What Jeff collects
You don't need an email address or password to use Jeff. The app signs you in with an anonymous account tied to your phone. Jeff then keeps:
- Your first name, if you give it, so Jeff can say hello and your friends know who's who in a group.
- Your home area (a town or part of a city, like "Hackney, London"), so Jeff searches near you.
- Your interests and favourites, and a short note of what Jeff has learned you like, so the picks suit you. You can see and change all of this in the app.
- Your chats with Jeff, so the conversation carries on where you left it.
- Your groups: which groups you're in, the messages there, and how you voted.
- What you do with picks: what you save, what you mark "not for me", and which events you tap "Get tickets" on. This is how Jeff learns what you like.
- A notification token, if you allow notifications, so Jeff can send them to your phone.
- Replies you report, if you tap to report one, so I can look into it.
- Basic usage records, such as how many messages Jeff sends, so I can keep an eye on running costs.
Your location
If you let Jeff use your location, the app finds roughly where you are when you send a message, rounded to about a kilometre, so Jeff can search nearby. That position is used for that search and is not stored. Jeff only asks for an approximate location, never your precise one, and you can turn it off at any time in your iPhone's Settings. Without it, Jeff uses the home area you gave.
Why Jeff uses it
Jeff uses your information to do what you ask: find things you'll enjoy, run your group chats and votes, and send the reminders and notifications you've allowed. The legal basis is that it's needed to provide the app you've chosen to use. Where you've given permission, such as for location and notifications, it's that permission, which you can withdraw at any time.
Jeff doesn't sell your information, doesn't show you adverts, and doesn't use advertising trackers.
Who it's shared with
Jeff relies on a few services to work. They only get what they need to do their part:
- Supabase stores Jeff's data and runs its servers.
- Anthropic provides the AI that writes Jeff's replies. To do that, your messages and what Jeff knows about your tastes are sent to Anthropic's Claude models. Anthropic doesn't use this to train its models.
- Ticketmaster, Skiddle and the resale sellers (Football TicketNet and Gigsberg, through Awin) are searched for events. The searches are for things like "comedy near Hackney". They don't include your name or account.
- Expo and Apple deliver notifications to your phone.
- Cloudflare hosts this website.
Some of these services are based outside the UK, mainly in the US. Where that's the case, they protect your information with the safeguards UK law requires, such as the UK's approved contract terms.
In a group, the other members can see your first name, your messages and how you voted. I'll only share your information with anyone else if the law requires it.
Ticket links
When you tap "Get tickets", you go to the seller's own website, and their privacy policy applies from there. Some of these links are affiliate links, so Jeff may earn a small commission if you buy, at no extra cost to you. For those, the affiliate network (such as Awin) may use cookies on the seller's site to record that you came from Jeff.
How long it's kept
Jeff keeps your information while you have an account. If you delete your account, everything linked to it is deleted from Jeff's database straight away: your profile, chats, saves, votes and group memberships. Messages you sent in a group chat stay there for the other members to see, but are no longer linked to your account. Usage records that can't be linked back to you may be kept for running costs.
Deleting your account
Tap the person icon on the home screen and choose to delete your account. Deleting the app on its own doesn't delete your account, so do this first if you want your information gone. You can also email me and I'll delete it for you.
Your rights
You have the right to:
- see the information Jeff holds about you, and get a copy of it
- correct it (most of it you can change yourself in the app)
- have it deleted
- object to, or ask me to limit, how it's used
To do any of these, email [email protected] and I'll reply within a month. If you're unhappy with how I've handled your information, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
Children
Jeff isn't meant for children under 13, and I don't knowingly collect information from them. If you think a child has used Jeff, email me and I'll delete their account.
Changes
If this policy changes, I'll update this page and the date at the top. If it's a big change, I'll let you know in the app.
